| biology | bio-life ology-study of living things |
| organism | scientific word for living things |
| habitat | an environment that provides the things a specific organism needs to live, grow, and reproduce Example: The eucalyptus tree is the habitat of the koala. |
| biotic factor | the parts of a habitat that are living, or once living, and interact with an organism Example: A dog is a biotic factor because it is living. |
| abiotic factor | the nonliving parts of an organism's habitat Example: The sun is an abiotic factor because it isn't living |
| species | a group of organism's that can mate with each other and produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce Example: Humans are a species because we also reproduce. |
| population | all the members of one species living in a particular area Example: Perth Amboy has a population of around 40,000 people. |
| community | all the different populations that live together in an area Example: New Jersey is a community because there are many towns and people that make it up. |
| ecosystem | the community or organisms that live in a particular area, along with their nonliving environment Example: The ecosystem of a desert is very hot and dry. |
| ecology | the study of how organisms interact with each other and with their environment |
| birth rate | the number of births per 1,000 individuals for a given time period Example: The birth rate of the United States is 13.62 |
| death rate | the number of deaths per 1,000 individuals for a given time period Example: The death rate of Ireland is 6.41. |
| immigration | moving into a population Example:Animals immigrate to other places during winter, so they don't have to with stand the cold weather |
| emigration | leaving a population Example: Animals emigrate when destruction or damage happens to their habitat. |
| population density | the number of individuals in an area of a specific size Example; Scientists find the population density of endangered species to find how many of them are left. |
| limiting factor | an evironmental factor that causes a population to stop growing Example: The poaching of African elephants, which are an endangered species, is a limting factor to their production. |
| carrying capacity | the largest population that an area can support Example: The carrying capacity of an area must not be exceeded. |
