| biology | bio-life ology-study of study or living things |
| organism | scientific word for living thing. |
| habitat | an environment that provides the things a specific organism needs to live, grow, and reproduce. EXAMPLE: forest habitat or a cave habitat. |
| biotic factor | a living or once living part of an organism's habitat. EXAMPLE: birds, plants, trees. |
| abiotic factor | a nonliving part of an organism's habitat. EXAMPLE: water, rocks, dirt, or soil. |
| species | a group of similar of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce off spring that can also mate and reproduce. EXAMPLE: a polar bear and a grizzly bear can mate and reproduce. |
| population | All the members of one species living in the same area. EXAMPLE: Prairie dogs in the Nebraska town. |
| community | All the different populations that live together in a particular area. EXAMPLE: prairie dogs, hawks, snakes, and grasses live on the prairie. |
| ecosystem | The community of organisms that live in a particular are, along with their nonliving environment. EXAMPLE: deserts, oceans, ponds, and forests. |
| ecology | The study of how organisms interact with each other and with their environment. EXAMPLE: population ecology, community ecology and behavioral ecology. |
| birth rate | The number of births per 1,000 individuals for a given time period. EXAMPLE:Birth rates in other country's are either lower or higher. |
| death rate | The number of deaths per 1,000 individuals for a given time period. EXAMPLE: Death rates are different in other country's, they compare a lot. |
| immigration | Moving into a population. EXAMPLE: Deer in immigrated from Minnesota, Wisconsin,and Missouri, to Iowa. |
| emigration | Leaving a population. EXAMPLE: deer from Minnesota moved to Iowa. |
| population density | The number of individuals in an area of a specific size. EXAMPLE: Divide population 1,000,000 by area 2000 sq kms equals 500 people per sq km |
| limiting factor | An environmental factor that causes a population to stop growing or decrease in size. EXAMPLE:weather conditions, space, food, and water. |
| carrying capacity | The largest population that an area can support. EXAMPLE: in a giraffe field if the max capacity is 10 giraffes than it wont hold 15 of them. |
