Biology bio-life ology-study of srudy of living things
Organism scientific word for a living thing example- a prairie dog
Habitat an environment that provides the things a specific organism needs to live, grow, and reproduce example- forest habitat
Biotic Factor a living or once living part of an organism's habitat example: a squirrel or plants
Population all mambers of one species living in the same area example-the whole amount of prairie dogs in Nebraska town
Community a group of animals that live in the same area with common interests example-the community of dogs in Nebraska town that all like cats
Ecosystem a system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their environment example-a desert ecosystem, with all the animals adapted to living with little amounts of water
Ecology the branch of biology dealing with the relations and interactions between organisms and their environment, including other organisms
Birth Rate the proportion of births to the total population in a place in a given time, usually expressed as a quantity per 1000 of population example-the birth rate in the U.S. is 12.7 per 1000 people
Death Rate the number of deaths per unit, usually 1000, of population in a given place and time example-in the U.S. the death rate is 8.4 per 1000 people
Immigration the movement of non-native people/animals into a country in order to settle there example-some birds could move from their place to another to seek a better home
Emigration the leave/migrate from one place to settle in another example-some animals emigrate in a certain season to live in a safe environment
Population Density the number of people living per unit of an area example-the population density of Perth Amboy is 1082 inhabitants per square mile
Limiting Factor an environmental factor that tends to limit population size example-food and space
Carrying Capacity the maximum number of individuals that an area of land can support, usually determined by their food requirements example-some places can't hold many organisms so only a few can live there
Abaotic Factor a nonliving condition or thing, as climate or habitat, that influences or affects an ecosystem and the organisms in it example-sun, moon, water, rocks, clouds
Species a class of individuals having some common characteristics or qualities; distinct sort or kind example-humans are a species
