| Organism | The scientific word for living things. | Ex. One prairie dog |
| Habitat | An environment that provides the things a specific organism needs to live, grow, and reproduce. | Ex. A Prairie |
| Biotic Factors | The parts of a habitat that are living, or once living, and interact with an organism. | Ex. Grasses, Birds, Plants |
| Abiotic Factors | The non-living parts of an organism's habitat. | Ex. Soil, Water, Heat |
| Species | A group of organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce. | Ex. Dogs |
| Population | All the members of one species living in a particular area. | Ex. Prairie Dog town |
| Communities | All the different populations that live together in an area. | Ex. All the living things that interact on the prairie. |
| Ecosystems | The community of organisms that live in a particular area, along with their non-living environment. | Ex. Deserts, Oceans, Ponds, Forests |
| Ecology | The study of how organisms interact with each other and with their environment. | |
| Death rate | The number of deaths per 1,000 individuals for a given time period. | |
| Immigration | Moving into a population | Ex. A herd moving into another land and permanently staying there. |
| Emigration | Leaving a population | Ex. Ex. If food is scarce, a herd might wonder in search of another grassland. |
| Population Density | The number of individuals in an area of a specific size. | Ex. 20 butterflies in a 10 square meter garden. (20 butterflies per square meter) |
| Limiting factor | An environmental factor that causes population to stop growing or decrease in size. | Ex. a inhabited area running out of water, space, or food. |
| Carry Capacity | The largest population that an area can support. | Ex. The carrying capacity of a giraffe habitat is 10 giraffes. |
| Birth Rate | The number of births per 1,000 individuals for a given time period. |
