Earth Science Vocabulary Set 9

QuestionAnswer
Weathering The breakdown and disintegration of rocks and minerals at the earth’s surface by mechanical and chemical processes.
Erosion The removal of broken down rocks and minerals by wind, water, ice, and gravity.
Delta The fanning out deposit of sand and sediment that collects where a stream connects to a larger body of water.
Glacier A large mass of moving ice formed on land over many years that does not completely melt during the summer.
Moraine A pile of broken down rock particles deposited by a glacier, which may extend for miles.
Isostasy A tendency for the earth’s crust to maintain equilibrium when large amounts of weight are added to or removed from the crust. This causes the crust to push further into the asthenosphere with added weight and rebound as the weight is removed.
Sinkhole A circular depression on the surface of the earth caused by the collapse of a cavern roof or surface rocks that have been dissolved.
Longshore Current A water current that moves parallel to the beach and is caused by waves that strike the beach at an angle.
Tsunami A large wave on the ocean, usually caused by an earthquake, a volcanic eruption, or coastal landslide.
Fossil The evidence in rock of the presence of a plant or an animal from an earlier geologic period.
