Earth Science Vocabulary Set 8

QuestionAnswer
Fault A crack in the Earth’s crust where sections of crust move relative to each other. Movement in these areas can cause earthquakes. General types include normal, reverse and strike-slip.
Magma Molten rock found below the Earth’s surface.
Lava Molten rock that reaches the Earth’s surface.
Viscosity The property of a fluid's thickness or resistance to flow.
Pyroclastic Rock Rock fragments ejected from a volcano during an eruption. These fragments may include tiny ash particles, medium-sized cinders and large volcanic bombs.
Cinder Cone A relatively small volcano made out of loose rock fragments erupted from a central vent. This volcano type often resembles a giant anthill.
Composite Volcano A volcano that is made of alternating layers of lava flows and rock fragments. These volcanoes tend to have highly explosive eruptions and are also known as stratovolcanoes.
Shield Volcano A large, gradually sloping volcano that tends to gently erupt large amounts of basaltic lava.
Hot Spot A place where it is believed that magma from the mantle is rising up and burning through the crust, which creates volcanoes. These volcanoes, such as the ones in Hawaii, can be far from plate boundaries.
Geyser A type of hot spring that periodically erupts jets of hot water and steam.
