reproduction the process by which living things produce new individuals of the same type
zygote a fertilized egg
chromosomes carry the information that controls inherited characteristics
testes the organs of the male reproductive system in which sperm are produced
testosterone a hormone that controls the development of physical characteristics in men
scrotum the external pouch of skin that cover the testes
semen a mix of sperm and fluids
penis the organ through which semen leaves a man's body
ovary organ that produces egg cells
estrogen hormone that controls the development of physical characteristics in females
oviduct place where fertilization takes place
Fallopian tubes another name for oviduct
womb another name for uterus
uterus place where the baby grows and develops
menstrual cycle the monthly cycle of changes that occurs in the female reproductive system
vagina birth canal; muscular passageway leading to the outside of the woman's body
ovulation the part of the menstrual cycle when an egg is released from the ovary
menstruation the cycle of ovulation (releasing an egg) and the shedding of the thickened lining of the uterus when there is no fertilized egg
fetus the name for the developing human after nine weeks
embryo the name for the developing human until about 8 weeks
amniotic sac the membrane that surrounds the embryo and develops into a fluid-filled sac to protect the fetus
placenta becomes the link between the developing embryo and the mother
umbilical cord a ropelike structure that forms between the embryo and the placenta; contains blood vessels that link the embryo and the mother but maintains separate circulatory systems
identical twins 2 individuals that develop from one fertilized egg
fraternal twins 2 individuals that develop from two eggs that are released at the same time and fertilized by 2 different sperm
adolescence the stage of development when children become adults physically and mentally and socially
puberty the period of development in which the body becomes able to reproduce
