Bair Living Things

Chapter 1.1

TermDefinition
microorganisms These are organisms that are made of just one cell.
kingdoms Scientists divide organisms into these six categories.
cells These are the basic unit of all living things.
cell membrane This is the boundary that separates the inside of the cell from the outside of the cell.
organization This is one of the common characteristics of all living things. An example of this is when an organism has an outside and an inside.
growth This is one of the common characteristics of all living things. It is when living things increase in size.
reproduction This is one of the common characteristics of all living things. It is when living things form new organisms like themselves
binary fission This is when one cell separates into two cells making an exact copy of itself.
deoxyribonucleic acid DNA
DNA This "code" contains an individual organisms characteristics.
response This is one of the common characteristics of all living things. This is when an organism responds to changes in its environment.
energy, materials and living space Things that all living things need.
virus This is not alive. It is genetic material enclosed in a protein shell.
