groundwater

water

QuestionAnswer
groundwater is the water that soaks into the soil
permeanility is the measure of the ability of a rock or sediment to allow water to transport (pass) through it.
aquifer As water soaks into the ground it will pass through the permeable layers of the soil
zone of aeration is at the top of the aquifer and is the area where the soil particles are surrounded by air.
zone of saturation is below the zone of aeration and is the area where the soil particles are surrounded by water
karst topography is associated with groundwater erosion and weathering of rock. Karst topography develops in area underlain by carbonate rocks including limestone and dolomite.
what is the very top of the zone of saturation? the water table.
how does karst topography form? forms as the groundwater rises and falls in the aquifer. Rainwater becomes slightly acidic when it mixes with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to form carbonic acid. Carbonic acid dissolves carbonate rocks such as limestone and dolomite.
what are features of karst topography? features as caves, caverns and sinkholes. Erosion by dripping water in caves and caverns will leave depositional features such as stalactites and stalagmites that are made of calcite. Sinkholes form where caverns have collapsed.
what is groundwater for us? finite and is essential for survival. This supply of freshwater is easily polluted by geologic processes such as erosion and human activities such as waste disposal.
