Meteorology-Weather

QuestionAnswer
How is weather created? The transfer of energy, or heat, between the Earth's surface and atmosphere creates weather.
How do weather and climate differ from each other? Weather describes the current state of the atmosphere from day to day; Climate describes the typical weather patterns of certain locations over a period of many years.
What are the four major factors that affect climate? The four major factors are latitude, elevation, proximity to oceans, and position relative to mountains.
What are the three major climatic zones? The three major climatic zones are tropical (0-30 degrees), temperate (30-60 degrees), and polar (60-90 degrees).
Earth's surface is heated more by the sun than the atmosphere; how is the amount of energy reaching the Earth's surface controlled? It is controlled by the angle of sunlight striking the surface and varies with the seasons.
Which has more energy per unit area: areas near the equator or areas closer to the poles? Areas near the equator.
How are winds created? They are created by the uneven heating of the Earth's surface and is modified by the Coriolis Effect.
Where do land breezes occur? Where do sea breezes develop? Land breezes occur at the ocean. Sea Breezes develop when wind blows from ocean to land.
Global wind patterns move warm air from the equator to the poles and cold air from the poles to the equator in an attempt to equalize temperature; how are global wind patterns developed? They develop from uneven heating of the Earth's surface.
What type of pressure systems ride on a jet stream? Low pressure systems.
