Oceanography

The study of oceans and seas and bodies of water

QuestionAnswer
What is convection? The major mechanism of energy transfer in the oceans, interior of Earth, and atmosphere.
How are most waves generated? Most waves are generated by winds.
Why are oceans important? The are a home to many food and mineral sources, travel and human recreation and sports.
What do the large current systems do? The large current systems carry warm water from the equator to the poles and cold water from the poles to the equator.
Any decrease in food stocks in the ocean will have a negative impact economically on industries that are dependent on those food stocks. What foods from the ocean are people most highly dependent? Fish, shellfish, and various other sea creatures and plants.
What happens when the waters warm? Storms and weather disasters become more common.
How are sea floor features caused? They are caused by plate tectonics, these features include trenches and mid-ocean ridges.
Does the topography of the seafloor vary like the continents? Yes
True or False, climate nearer the ocean are milder than inland climates. True
What are tides? The periodic rise and fall of the water level which is caused by the moon and the sun.
True or False, the continental shelf is the relatively flat area extending from the shoreline and the rise. (shoreline and rise are submerged parts of continent. True
