Weather
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What creates weather? | the transfer of energy (heat) between the Earth’s surface and atmosphere |
| What are the four major factors that affect climate? | latitude, elevation, proximity to oceans and position relative to mountains. |
| What are the three major climate zones? | tropical (0 to 30 degrees), temperate (30 to 60 degrees) and polar (60 to 90 degrees |
| What is the jet stream? | a fast moving river of wind that is found at the top of the troposphere or at the bottom of the stratosphere |
| What is the major cause of weather? | convection in the atmosphere |
| What is a tornado? | a narrow, violent, funnel-shaped column of spiral winds that extend downward from a cloud toward the earth |
| What is a hurricane? | a tropical cyclone (rotates counterclockwise and is an intense low pressure system) with sustained winds above 120 kilometers per hour (75 mph) or greater |
| What are the types of clouds? | Cirrus, cumulus, and stratus |
| What does high and low barometric pressure mean? | High means air is sinking, so weather will be fair and clear and low means air is rising (convection), so weather will be poor, cloudy and possibly have precipitation |
| Where does Continental Polar, Continental Tropical, and Maritime Polar come from? | cP comes from Canada, cT comes from Mexico, and mP comes from North Atlantic or North Pacific |
