| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a Jet Stream? | A Jet Stream is a fast moving river of wind that is found at the top of the troposphere or at the bottom of the stratosphere |
| What is a Tornado? | A tornado is a narrow, violent, funnel-shaped column of spiral winds that extend downward from a cloud toward the earth. |
| What is a Hurricane? | A hurricane is a tropical cyclone (rotates counterclockwise and is an intense low pressure system) with sustained winds above 120 kilometers per hour (75 mph) or greater |
| What creates Weather? | Transfer of energy (heat) between the Earth’s surface and atmosphere |
| Name the four major factors that effect climate. | Latitude, elevation, proximity to oceans and position relative to mountains. |
| Name the three major climate zones. | Tropical (0 to 30 degrees), temperate (30 to 60 degrees) and polar (60 to 90 degrees. |
| What is the main cause of weather? | Convection in the Atmosphere |
| Name all the types of clouds. | Cirrus, Cumulus, Stratus, and Cumulonimbus |
| How is Wind created? | Winds are created by uneven heating of the Earth’s surface and modified (deflected) by the Coriolis Effect which is caused by the Earth’s rotation |
| Name some tools used to predict weather. | Thermometers for temperature, barometers for barometric pressure (weight of the atmosphere), and psychrometers to measure relative humidity (amount of moisture (water vapor) in the air). |
