QuestionAnswer
earthquake the shaking or trembling of the Earth due to the movement of tectonic plates.
latitude the angular distance between an imaginary line around a heavenly body parallel to its equator and the equator itself
longitude distance in degrees east or west of the prime meridian
convecting mantle This is made up of very hot liquid iron and nickel. The convecting mantle moves slowly around around the Earth's metallic core.
crust The outer layer of the planet. It is very thin compared to the other layers and is made up of soil and rock.
lithosphere The Earth's outermost shell. The lithosphere includes the crust and uppermost part of the mantle.
lithospheric plates The fractured or broken pieces of the surface of the Earth, also referred to as the tectonic plates.
metallic core It is a very hot sphere of solid iron and nickel due to the great weight and pressure of the outer layers.
