| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Membrane | Thin structure that surrounds the cytoplasm and nucleus of plant and animal cells |
| Cell Wall | The stiff structure outside the cell membrane in a plant cell; provides support |
| Chloroplasts | An organelle located in the cytoplasm in plant cells that contains chlorphyll |
| Chromosomes | Located in the nucleus, they contain the code that controls the cell and transmits heredity characteristics |
| Cytoplasm | A jellylike substance filling the cell that provides energy in the cell |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | An organelle found throughout the cytoplasm that transports material through a cell |
| Golgi Bodies | An organelle that manufactures and moves material in the cytoplasm of the cell |
| Mitochondria | An organelle in the cytoplasm that produces energy in a cell |
| Nuclear Membrane | A thin layer that surrounds the nucleus and seperates it from the rest of the cell |
| Nucleus | The control center for most of a cell"s activities |
| Ribosomes | An organelle located on the endoplasmic reticulum that provides protein for the cells |
| Vacuole | An organelle in the cytoplasm that stores water, food, and wastes in a cell that helps get rid of waste |
| Prokaryote | Organisms without a cell nucleus |
| Eukaryote | Organisms with a cell nucleus |
| Mitosis | The process by which a cell separates the chromosomes in its cell nucleus into two identical sets, in two separate nuclei. |
| Meiosis | When cells divide half their chromosomes into their offspring to create a unique offspring |
| Monomer | a molecule that is able to bond in long chains. |
| Polymer | can be made up of thousands of monomer. |
| Carbohydrates | an organic compound that consists only of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Provides energy |
| Lipids | Fat, oils, waxes |
| Proteins | large biological molecules consisting of one or more chains of amino acids. |
| Nucleic Acids | large biological molecules essential for all known forms of life |
