PARTS OF THE EAR

TermDefinition
sound waves vibrations that move through the air to our ears
outer ear made up of the pinna, the ear canal, and the ear drum
pinna visible portion of the ear that collects sound waves and funnels them through the ear canal
ear canal a passageway that begins at the pinna and ends at the ear drum; it is lined by wax producing glands and fine hairs
ear wax protects the eardrum by trapping dirt and foreign bodies
ear drum a thin membrane that separates the outer ear and the middle ear; it vibrates as soon as it receives sound waves
middle ear located between the outer ear and the inner ear; contains three tiny bones and the eustachian tube
middle ear cavity an air filled space that contains three tiny bones
eustachian tube a tube that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat, it equalizes air pressure in the middle ear and drains fluid from the middle ear to the back of the throat
ossicles the three bones in the middle ear that vibrate in response to one another in order to send vibrations from the outer ear to the inner ear
hammer a tiny bone located next to the eardrum; the vibrations from the eardrum cause it to vibrate
anvil a tiny bone next to the hammer; it vibrates in response to the vibration of hammer
stirrup it vibrates in response to the anvil and passes compression waves to the inner ear
oval window an opening in the cochlea where the stirrup pushes through sending vibrations into the cochlea
inner ear it is filled with a water-like substance and tiny hairs and makes up both the hearing and balancing organs
balance organs or semicircular canals fluid-filled loops attached to the cochlea that help in maintaining the balance
cochlea a spiral tube that has hair cells which respond to different frequencies of vibrations and then changes the vibrations into electrical impulses
hair cells they change vibrations into electrical impulses which the brain interprets as sounds
hearing nerve carries the electrical impulses generated in the cochlea to the brain where they are interpreted as sounds
temporal lobe where the hearing center of the brain is located

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
