TermDefinition
comet a celestial object consisting of a nucleus of ice and dust and, when near the sun, a “tail” of gas and dust particles pointing away from the sun.
meteor a small body of matter from outer space that enters the earth’s atmosphere, burning as a result of friction and appearing as a streak of light.
asteroid A small rocky body orbiting the sun. A large number can be found in a belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
universe All existing matter and space considered as a whole.
solar system The collection of eight planets and their moons in orbit around the sun, together with smaller bodies in the form of asteroids, meteoroids, and comets.
galaxy A system of billions of stars, gas, and dust, held together by gravitational attraction.
moon phases The appearance of the lit part of the Moon as seen by an observer on Earth.
Solar eclipse This happens when the moon's shadow falls on Earth blocking out the sun's light.
Lunar eclipse This happens when Earth's shadow falls on the moon blocking the moon's light.
The Milky Way Galaxy The spiral galaxy in which our solar system is located.
The Big Bang Theory The theory that the universe exploded from a single point, and has been expanding ever since.
gravity The force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass.
Geocentric Model Ptolemy's model of the universe with Earth at the center of the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets.
Heliocentric Model Copernicus' model in which the Earth and planets revolve around the Sun at the center of the Solar System.
