| Term | Definition |

| comet | a celestial object consisting of a nucleus of ice and dust and, when near the sun, a “tail” of gas and dust particles pointing away from the sun. |
| meteor | a small body of matter from outer space that enters the earth’s atmosphere, burning as a result of friction and appearing as a streak of light. |
| asteroid | A small rocky body orbiting the sun. A large number can be found in a belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. |
| universe | All existing matter and space considered as a whole. |
| solar system | The collection of eight planets and their moons in orbit around the sun, together with smaller bodies in the form of asteroids, meteoroids, and comets. |
| galaxy | A system of billions of stars, gas, and dust, held together by gravitational attraction. |
| moon phases | The appearance of the lit part of the Moon as seen by an observer on Earth. |
| Solar eclipse | This happens when the moon's shadow falls on Earth blocking out the sun's light. |
| Lunar eclipse | This happens when Earth's shadow falls on the moon blocking the moon's light. |
| The Milky Way Galaxy | The spiral galaxy in which our solar system is located. |
| The Big Bang Theory | The theory that the universe exploded from a single point, and has been expanding ever since. |
| gravity | The force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass. |
| Geocentric Model | Ptolemy's model of the universe with Earth at the center of the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets. |
| Heliocentric Model | Copernicus' model in which the Earth and planets revolve around the Sun at the center of the Solar System. |
