| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Wall | stiff outer barrier of a plant cell, outside the cell membrane, made mostly of cellulose |
| Cell Membrane | structure that surrounds the cytoplasm |
| Nucleus | present in most eukaryotic cells, typically a single rounded structure bounded by a double membrane, containing the genetic material |
| Chromosomes | located in the nucleus, contains the code that controls the cell and transmits the heredity characteristics |
| Nuclear Membrane | thin layer that surrounds the nucleus and separates it from the rest of the cell |
| Mitochondria | produces the energy |
| Cytoplasm | jellylike substance that fills the cell and provides energy in the cell |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | organelle found throughout the cytoplasm that transports material throughout the cell |
| Lysosome | breaks down and disposes of waste in the cell |
| Ribosomes | provides protein |
| Golgi Bodies | manufactures and moves materials in the cytoplasm of the cell |
| Vacuole | stores water and food |
| Chloroplast | only found in plant cells, converts sunlight into energy, contains chlorophyll |
| Chlorophyll | absorbs the sunlight and converts it into energy |
| Polymer | a substance that is built up by a number of similar molecular units that are bounded together; can either be a natural or synthetic compound |
| Monomer | simple molecule that can join together to form a macro-molecule (polymer); building blocks of polymer |
| Lipids | a large collection of fats, oils, waxes, and fat soluble vitamins found in the human body; insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents; includes many natural oils, waxes, and steroids |
| Prokaryote | single-celled organism with no nuclues |
| Eukaryote | organisms with a nucles |
| Mitosis | type of cell division in which both daughter cells have the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent cell |
| Meosis | type of cell division in which the daughter cells have half the number and kind of the parent chromosomes |
| Carbohydrates | organic compounds that can be broken down and used as energy in animals and humans |
| Proteins | organic compounds consisting of large chains of amino acid; essential to the parts of the body (especially as structural components |
| Nucleic Acids | a complex organic substance present in living cells (especially DNA or RNA) |
