Soil- Not just dirt!

Why is soil important to plants? Soil gives plants support and food (nutrients).
Where do soils come from? All soils are created from the breaking down, or weathering of rocks.
How long does it take to form one inch of topsoil? It can take more than 500 years!
Why is soil an important natural resource? Soil is home to many animals. We need soil to grow plants. Soil cannot be replaced.
Why is humus soil important? Humus soil is important because it is rich in nutrients, which is best for plant growth.
How is humus soil made? Humus soil is made from bits of dead organisms and plants.
How does most soil erosion occur? Most soil erosion occurs when wind and water carry away the topsoil.
What would cause erosion in a desert environment? Wind
Which soil is best for holding water? Clay
If we wanted to slow down the erosion occurring on a hill, what could we do? The best way to stop erosion is to cover the hill with grass and plants.
Why is topsoil so important? Topsoil is most important because that is the layer of soil where most plants grow.
What is topsoil, subsoil and bedrock? Those are the three layers of soil.
What things cause weathering? Weathering is caused by wind, water, plant roots, or natural events.
What type of soil is found mainly at the beach? Sand
What type of soil is found mainly near rivers or lakes? Silt
Which type of soil contains topsoil, silt, clay and sand? Loam
How does soil help trees? Like all plants, trees get nutrients from soil. Soil also provides support for tree roots.
Why do we need to conserve our soil? Like any nonrenewable resource, we need to protect soil because without it we couldn't grow plants. It also provides homes to many animals.
