Weather 8

Meteorology, ES.12

QuestionAnswer
What creates weather? Transfer of energy (heat) between the Earth’s surface and atmosphere
What is the difference b/w weather and climate? weather is the current state of the atmosphere or day to day, and climate is typical (average), and weather patterns of certain locations over a period of many years
What's the 4 major factors that affect climate? latitude, elevation, proximity to oceans and position relative to mountains
Why do areas near the equator receive more heat than those closer to the poles? Areas near the equator receive sunlight at the highest angle (90 degrees) and have more energy (heat) per unit area than those closer to the poles
How is wind created? Winds are created by uneven heating of the Earth’s surface and modified (deflected) by the Coriolis Effect which is caused by the Earth’s rotation.
What is the jet stream? The jet stream is a fast moving river of wind that is found at the top of the troposphere or at the bottom of the stratosphere.
What causes weather in the Atmosphere? Convection causes weather in the atmosphere because, warm air rises (less dense) and cold air sinks (more dense).
What are psychometers? pshychometer is used to measure relative humidity (amount of moisture (water vapor) in the air)
what is the difference in rotation of high and low pressure areas? High pressure systems spin clockwise and low pressure systems spin counterclockwise. Warm fronts are located on the right side (half) of low pressure stems. Cold fronts are usually found on the left side (half) of low pressure systems
what is the difference b/w continental polar, continental tropical, and maritime polar? (cP) come from Canada and are cold and dry. This air mass makes our temperatures colder but drier (no precipitation) (cT) come from Mexico and are warm and dry. This air mass makes out temperatures warmer and drier. (can lead to drought overtime) (mP)
