Minerals
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a mineral? | naturally occurring (not manmade), solid, inorganic (not alive nor has it ever been alive) substance that has a definite chemical composition (made of same elements) and a crystalline structure (atoms have a repeating pattern). |
| what are carbonates? | are made of carbon and oxygen and contain the carbonate compound CO3 . Carbonates fizz when acid is dropped on them. Common carbonates are calcite and dolomite. |
| What are oxides? | are made of oxygen and a metal. Common oxides are hematite and magnetite (acts like or is attracted to a magnet). Both produce iron |
| How are minerals identified? | by their physical properties. |
| What is the hardness of a mineral? | is the minerals resistance to being scratched. The hardness of a mineral is dependent up the strength of the bonds of the atoms and how tightly packed the atoms are in the mineral |
| What is the hardness of the minerals measured by? | Moh's Hardness Scale |
| What is the luster of a mineral? | the way the mineral reflects light |
| what is metallic? | shines like metal |
| what is nonmetallic? | does not shine like metal. |
| What minerals form by metamorphism? | Garnet, sapphires, rubies, and kyanite. |
| What does chemical weathering do to minerals? | Allow them to undergo a chemical change and become new minerals. |
