Minerals

What is a mineral? naturally occurring (not manmade), solid, inorganic (not alive nor has it ever been alive) substance that has a definite chemical composition (made of same elements) and a crystalline structure (atoms have a repeating pattern).
what are carbonates? are made of carbon and oxygen and contain the carbonate compound CO3 . Carbonates fizz when acid is dropped on them. Common carbonates are calcite and dolomite.
What are oxides? are made of oxygen and a metal. Common oxides are hematite and magnetite (acts like or is attracted to a magnet). Both produce iron
How are minerals identified? by their physical properties.
What is the hardness of a mineral? is the minerals resistance to being scratched. The hardness of a mineral is dependent up the strength of the bonds of the atoms and how tightly packed the atoms are in the mineral
What is the hardness of the minerals measured by? Moh's Hardness Scale
What is the luster of a mineral? the way the mineral reflects light
what is metallic? shines like metal
what is nonmetallic? does not shine like metal.
What minerals form by metamorphism? Garnet, sapphires, rubies, and kyanite.
What does chemical weathering do to minerals? Allow them to undergo a chemical change and become new minerals.
