| axis | the imaginary line that passes through Earth's center from the North Pole to the South Pole (Earth rotates on its axis every 24 hours) |
| rotation | the spinning of Earth on its axis (one rotation equals one day; Earth rotates from west to east on its axis, making the sun, moon and starts look as though they are moving from east to west) |
| revolution | one complete trip of Earth around the sun (one revolution equals one year) |
| orbit | Earth's path around the sun; in the shape of an ellipse or flattened circle |
| hemisphere | one half of a sphere; especially of the earth |
| phases of the moon | the regular changes in the way the moon looks from Earth; caused by changes in the parts of the moon that reflects light from the sun to Earth |
| eclipse | one object in space casting its shadow on another object in space |
| shadow | a dark shape made by something blocking out light |
