2.2 nutrient cycle
Question | Answer |
---|---|
nutrient | A nutrient is a chemical that an organism needs to live and grow or a substance used in an organism's metabolism which must be taken in from its environment. |
stores | nutrients that are accumulated for short or land periods of time earth's atmosphere, oceans, and land masses |
nutrients cycles | the way nutrients are cycled in the biosphere, the continuous flows of nutrients in and out of stores |
sedimentation | the process in which soil particles and decaying organic matter accumulate in layers on the ground or at the bottom of large bodies of water contributing to the formation of sedimentary rock |
carbonate | a combination of carbon and oxygen that is dissolved in ocean water |
photosynthesis | a process in which carbon dioxide enters the leaves of plants and reacts with water in the presence of sunlight to produce carbohydrates and oxygen; photosynthesis also occurs in some micro-organisms |
cellular respiration | is the process in which both plants and animals release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere by converting carbohydrates and oxygen into carbon dioxide |
nitrogen fixation | the process in which nitrogen gas is converted into compounds that contain nitrate or ammoniun |
nitrogen fixing bacteria | bacteria that covert nitrogen gas into ammonium during decomposition, playing a significant role in nitrogen fixation |
nitrification | the process in which ammonium is converted into nitrate |
nitrifying bacteria | soil bacteria involved in two stages of nitrification. in the first stage, certain species convert ammonium into nitrite; in the second stage, different species convert nitrite into nitrate |
denitrification | the process in which nitrogen is returned to the atmosphere |
denitrifying bacteria | bacteria that convert nitrate back into nitrogen gas |
leaching | removal by water of substances that have dissolved in moist soil |
eutrophication | the process by which excess nutrients in aquatic ecosystems result increased plant production and decay |
weathering | the process in which rock is broken down into smaller fragments |
geologic uplift | the process of mountain building in which earths crust folds and deeply buried rock layers rise and are exposed |
