Endocrine System VII
The Endocrine System
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| This organ produces hormones that stimulates activity in ovaries and testes | Anterior Pituitary |
| This organ produces hormones that causes uterus to contract and kidneys to reabsorb water. | Posterior Pituitary |
| This organ produces hormones that regulates metabolism and lowers blood calcium concentrations. | Thyroid |
| This organ produces hormones that increases blood calcium concentration | Parathyroid |
| This organ produces hormones that increases sodium and water reabsorption in kidneys | Adrenal Cortex |
| This organ produces hormones that increase blood glucose levels and heart rate | Adrenal Medulla |
| This organ produces hormones that decreases or increases blood sugar concentration | Pancreas |
| This organ produces hormones that promote female secondary sex characteristics and thickens endometrial lining | Ovaries |
| This organ produces hormones that promote male secondary sex characteristics and spermatogenesis | Testes |
| What does the hormone oxytocin do? | Causes uterus contraction. |
| What does the hormone calcitonin do? | Lowers blood calcium levels |
| What does the hormone glucagon do? | Increases blood sugar concentration |
| What does the hormone vasopressin do? | Causes kidney to reabsorb water |
| What does the hormone prolactin do? | Causes mile secretion |
| What does the hormone ACTH do? | Stimulates the adrenal cortex |
| What does the hormone LH do? | Stimulates activity in ovary (release of ovum) and production of testosterone |
| What does the hormone FSH do? | Stimulates activity in ovaries and testes |
| What does the parathyroid hormone do? | Increases blood calcium concentration |
| What does the hormone aldosterone do? | Increase sodium and water reabsorption in kidneys |
| What does the hormone epinephrine norepinephrine do | Increase blood glucose level and heart rate. They give you a quick boost of energy. Fight or Flight response. |
| This system uses neurons to send nerve impulses. | The Nervous System |
| This system secretes hormones | The endocrine system |
| What does the hormone TSH do? | Is stimulates the thyroid to secrete thyroxine |
| These are 4 pea-shaped organs that rest on your thyroid | Parathyroid |
| Islets of Langerhans are a cluster of cells produced from what organ? | Pancrease |
| Name the two adrenal glands? | Adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla |
| This hormone is released by the adrenal cortex. It targets the liver to promote the release of glucose | Glucocorticoids |
| This hormone is released by the adrenal cortex. It targets the kidneys and promotes the retention of water. | Mineralocorticoids |
| This gland is referred to as the emergency gland. | Adrenal Medulla |
| Where are the adrenal glands located? | One on each kidney |
| Hormones only affect these types of cells in our body? | Target cells |
| How do hormones work if they are a steroid (Lipid soluble) | If a hormone is a steroid (lipid soluble) it will diffuse across the membrane of a target cell. It then binds to a receptor protein in the nucleus and activates a specific gene contained in the DNA, which in turn make proteins. |
| How do hormones work if they are a protein, peptide, or amine and cannot penetrate the target cell membrane? | The hormone binds to a receptor protein on the cell membrane of the target cell. This protein stimulates the production of a second messenger call cyclic AMP (cAMP). the cAMP molecule triggers various enzymes, leading to specific cellular changes. |
| How about mnemonics? When you think of the pituitary, think of GATOR pit. With that said, what are the hormones secreted by the pituitary? | Growth Hormone ACTH Thyroid-Stimulating hormone Oxytocin R, for antiduiRetic hormone (or vasopressin) |
| This organ secretes neurosecretory hormones | They hypothalamus |
