Regents Bio Final Review Vocabulary 16-30

TermDefinition
growth a process by which cells increase in number and size, resulting in an increase in size of the organism
synthesis the life function by which living things manufacture the complex compounds required to sustain life
regulation the life process by which living things respond to changes within & around them , and by which all life processes are coordinated
metabolism all life processes of an organism
autotrophs can make own food
heterotrophs must obtain food from outsde sources, can't make it
photosynthesis carried out by plants, alga & blue-green bacteria (autotrophs); use radiant energy of sunlight to convery carbon dioxide and water in to glucose
stomates small holes in leaves that let them exchange the gases used in photosynthesis
guard cells open & close the stomates
ATP gives all organisms their energy (adenosine triphosphate)
aerobic respiration requires oxygen, yields more energy
anaerobic respiration no oxygen respiration
diffusion requires no energy (passive transport); movement of molecules from hign to low concentration
active transport requires the use of energy, usually moving molecules from low to high concentration (against the concentration gradient or flow of diffusion)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
