alternative energy sources a source of energy other than the burning of a fossil fuel

fossils any remains or imprints of living things from the past

mineral a solid, nonliving material of Earth's crust with a distinct compositions. It is made of elements.
ozone a form of gas that makes a layer in the atmosphere that protects the earth from the sun's harmful ultra-violet rays.
pollution the addition of harmful substances to the environment
rock cycle a never-ending process in which rocks change from one kind into another
sedimentary rock a rock made of compacted and cemented materials.
igneous rock a rock formed when magma or lava cools and hardens.
metamorphic rock a rock that forms from another kind of rock under heat and pressure
soil horizons any of the layers of the soil from the surface to the bedrock. 3 layers..topsoil which contains humus which is the remains of dead plants and animals with lots of nutrients and minerals. 2nd layer is subsoil which has less humus. 3rd layer is weathered
smog a type of air pollution formed by particles produced by burning fossil fuels. A mixture of smoke and fog.
types of fossil fuels Coal, oil, and natural gas.
aquifer an underground layer of rock or soil filled with water
humus decayed plant or animal material in soil
topsoil the dark, top layer of soil, rich in humus and minerals, in which organisms live and most plants grow.
reservoirs a storage area for fresh water
Absolute age of fossils To find this you must find the age of the rock around the fossil
Characteristics Test hardness, test for luster, test for streak, test for fracture (rough break) or cleavage (smooth break)
anthracite another name for coal
