Weather terms and targets

QuestionAnswer
Atmosphere A collection of gasses that surrounds the Earth.
Convection When heat moves through a liquid or gas. Hot liquids/gasses move up and cold liquids/gasses move down.
Evaporation When a liquid turns to a gas because of a temperature change.
Condensation When a gas turns to a liquid.
Precipitation Rain, sleet, snow or hail that is a result of a high level of humidity in the air.
Dew Point The temperature where water begins to condense.
Lightning An electrical discharge caused by atoms of water colliding as they condense.
Thunder The sound caused by the rapid heating and expansion of air.
Cirrus Cloud A type of cloud that is made mostly ice crystals
Temperature The measure of the kinetic energy of atoms.
Elevation The distance negative or positive relative to sea level.
Topography The shape of the land.
Surface Currents Streams of air or water that influence the climate of a region.
Climate The average weather of a specific place.
Weather The condition of the atmosphere at a given time (an hour or day).
Tornado A spinning column of air caused by cold and warm air meeting in a flat area.
Hurricane A spinning column of air caused by large amounts of evaporating warm water.
Front Where to air masses meet
Cold Front Where warm air rises over cold air producing many days of rainy weather.
Warm Front When warm air pushes cold air out of the way. Brings little rain followed by many days of warm weather.
Global Warming The warming of the Earth caused by a rise in air pollution.
Greenhouse Effect The trapping of heat caused by the rise in air pollution.
Stratus Cloud Low forming clouds. Form in groups or chains.
Cumulus Clouds Middle forming clouds. Have a flat bottom and puffy tops.
