Surface water Fresh water that is aboveground in lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams.
Watershed An entire area of land that is drained by a river.
Groundwater Water that seeps underground in this way.
Aquifiers Large amounts of groundwater that are found underground in rock formations.
Recharge Zone Area of land from which the groundwater originates.
Desalinization Removing salt from saltwater.
Water pollution The introduction of chemical, physical, or biological agents into water that degrades the quality of water and the affects the organisms that depend on it.
Point Pollution A pollution that is discharged from a single source.
Nonpoint Pollution Pollution that comes from many sources rather than from a single specific site.
Biological magnification Accumulation of increasingly large amounts of a toxin within the tissues of organisms at each successive trophic level.
Thermal Pollution When excessive amounts of heat are added to bodies of water.
Artificial Eutrophication Eutrophication caused by humans which eventually chokes the lake of the pond.
