Unit 7/8: Ecology - interactions within a population/ among populations

TermDefinition
121. population A group of organisms of the same species living in the same ecosystem at the same time. They compete for resources, space and mates.
122. territory An area that an individual organism or social group occupy and defend against other members of the population.
123. cooperation when members of the same species work together in a group for the benefit of all members.
124. interdependent how all living things in an ecosystem depend on each other and their environment - everything is connected.
125. niche the particular role of a species within a community - includes its habitat, food source, and predators.
126. predator/prey The organism that hunts and eats/the organism that is hunted and eaten.
127. symbiosis/symbiotic a relationship between two organisms of different species in which at least one of them benefits
128. mutualism a symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benefit
129. commensalism a symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits, while the other neither benefits nor is harmed
130. parasitism a symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits (the parasite), which the other is harmed (the host)
