CH 7/8: Ecosystem; Food Web Vocabulary Review

QuestionAnswer
Community All the organisms that live in the same ecosystem and interact with each other.
Consumer An organism that eats other living things to get energy.
Ecosystem All living and nonliving things that exist and interact in one place.
Environment Everything that surrounds and affects a living thing.
Organic Matter The remains of plants and animals.
Pollinator An animal, such as an insect or bird, that helps make seeds by moving pollen from part of the plant to another.
Population The organisms of the same kind that live in an ecosystems.
Prairie A grassy land area with few or no trees.
Producer Any organism that makes its own food.
Rainforest An area with a great deal of rainfall; most rain forests are warm all year, and there is a lot of sunlight.
Reproduction The process of making more of one's own kind.
Seed Dispersal The scattering or carrying away of seeds from the plant that produced them.
Soil The loose material that covers much of the Earth's surface.
Temperate Zone Places with a temperate climate usually have warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters.
Carnivore An animal that eats only other animals.
Decay To break down into simpler materials.
Decomposer An organism that breaks down the remains of dead organisms.
Food Chain The path of energy in an ecosystem as one living thing eats another.
Food Web Two or more food chains that overlap.
Herbivore An animal that only eats plants.
Microorganism A tiny living thing that can only be seen with a microscope.
Omnivore An animal that eats both plants and animals.
Photosynthesis The process plants use to make food.
Predator An animal that hunts other animals for food.
Prey An animal that is hunted for food by a predator.
Recycling The process of breaking down materials into a different form for a new use.
Scavenger An animal that feeds on the remains of dead animals.
