rock-forming mineral the 20 minerals that make up most of the rocks of Earth's crust
granite a light colored rock that is high in silica content
basalt a dark colored rock that is low in silica content
grains the particles of minerals or other rocks that make up most rocks
texture the look and feel of the rock's surface
igneous rocks forms from the cooling of molten material
sedimentary rock forms when particles of other rocks or the remains of plants and animals are cemented together
metamorphic rock forms when existing rocks are changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions
extrusive rock rock that forms on the surface of the earth from rapidly cooling lava
intrusive rock rock that forms inside the earth from slowly cooling magma
sediment small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things.
erosion occurs when running water, wind, or ice loosen and carry away fragments of rock
deposition the process in which sediment settles out of the water or wind carrying it
compaction the process that presses sediment together
cementation the process in which dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles of sediment together
clastic rock a sedimentary rock that forms from fragments of other rocks
organic rock a sedimentary rock that forms from the remains of plants and animals
chemical rock a sedimentary rock that forms from mineral deposits left when seas or lakes evaporate
foliated a metamorphic rocks where the mineral crystals are arranged in bands or layers
rock cycle a series of processes on Earth's surface and in the crust and mantle that slowly change rocks from one kind to another
