| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Diaphysis | The long section of a long bone - the shaft. |
| Epiphysis | The rounded end of the long bone |
| Epiphyseal Line | The region of bone growth during development (in children) |
| Cartilage | Dense, avascular connective tissue. Forms the articulating surfaces of bone joints. |
| Epiphyseal Plate | Junction between diaphysis and epiphysis. Chondroblasts are found here. |
| Chondroblasts | Cells found in the epiphyseal plate. Undergo rapid division to produce bone growth. |
| Cancellous (Trabecular) Bone | Spongy bone; mineralised bone containing interspersed spaces (trabeculae). Large surface area. Phosphate and Calcium reservoir. Constantly being remodelled. |
| Medullary Cavity | Contains red and yellow bone marrow. Red blood cell production. |
| Endosteum | Lines the surface of the medullary cavity. Thin layer of connective tissue. Tightly adheres to bone surface - attached via collagen fibrils. |
| Periosteum | Covers the outside of the shaft. Thin layer of connective tissue. Tightly adheres to bone surface - attached via collagen fibrils. |
| Compact Bone | Lines the wall of the diaphysis |
