Excretory System 7th Grade Life Science

QuestionAnswer
What is the function of the Excretory System? To remove wastes from the body.
Describe the path of urine through the body from its formation to its elimination from the body? Urine travels from the kidneys through the ureters to the urinary bladder and out the urethra.
What waste are the lungs responsible for removing from the body? Carbon dioxide.
What are the kidneys and where are they located? Two bean shaped organs located on either side of the spine in the lower back.
What are the ureters? Tubes that carries urine from a kidney to the urinary bladder.
What waste is the skin responsible for removing from the body? Sweat.
What is urine? Urea, excess water and salts that have been removed from the blood.
What waste is the large intestine responsible for removing from the body? Feces.
What is the urinary bladder? Muscular sac that stores urine.
What waste are the kidneys responsible for removing from the body? Urine.
What is the urethra? Tube through which urine leaves the body.
What is the role of renal arteries in the excretory system? To carry blood into the kidneys to be filtered.
What is the role of the renal veins in the excretory system? To carry blood from the kidneys to the heart.
What are the five functions of the skin? (1) Protects body from injury, (2) Protects body from bacteria, (3) Protects body from drying out, (4) Controls body temperature, (5) Excretes waste (sweat).
LIst the three layers of skin. (1) Epidermis (2) Dermis (3) Subcutaneous Layer
What does the epidermis consist of? Thin layer of dead cells on top with a thicker layer of dividing cells underneath.
Where is the epidermis located? Top layer of skin.
Where is the dermis located? Thick middle layer of skin.
What is the dermis composed of? Nerve endings, Lymph vessels, Sweat glands, Hair follicles, Oil glands.
What do oil glands produce? What is the role of the oil? Sebum, which keeps hair and skin soft.
In which layer of skin would you find a hair follicle? Dermis.
In which layer of skin would I locate a layer of fat? Subcutaneous Layer.
What is the subcutaneous tissue? It is a layer of fat and connective tissue that houses larger blood vessels and nerves.
Compare and contrast the ureters and the urethra. The ureters are tubes that carry the urine to the urinary bladder; in comparison to the urethra, which is a small tube from which urine flows from the body.
What is excretion? the system in the body that collects wastes produced by cells and removes the wastes from the body.
Explain two ways in which the kidneys help to maintain homeostasis. Kidneys maintain homeostasis by removing wastes from the body; if wastes from the body; if wastes were not removed, they would poison body cells. In addition, by adjusting the amount of water reabsorbed, kidneys maintain water balance.
What is the main organ of excretion? Kidneys.
Normal urine contains both... Urea and water.
Describe the two stages of urine formation. First, both wastes and needed substances are removed from the blood. Then, the substances the body needs are returned to the blood. Once the filtering and reabsorbing processes are complete, the fluid remaining is urine.
