What Is weathering and erosion? weathering is the process that breaks down rock and other substances at Earths surface. Erosion is the removal of rock particles by wind water ice or gravity.
what is uniformitarianism? a principal that states that the same process that operate today operated in the past.
what is mechanical weathering? is the type of weathering in which rock is physically broken into smaller pieces.
what is ice wedging? wedges of ice in rocks widen and deepen water seeps deeper into the cracks.
what is abrasion? refers to the grinding away of rock by rock particles carried by water, ice, wind, or gravity.
what is chemical weathering? is the process that break down rock through chemical changes.
what is oxidation? Iron combines with oxygen in the presence of water in a process.
what is permeable? means that a material is full of tiny, connected air spaces that allow water to seep through it.
what is bedrock? is the solid layer of rock beneath the soil.
what is soil? is the loose, weathered material on earth´s surface in which plants can grow.
what is humus? is a dark-colored substance that forms as plant and animal remains decay.
what is fertility? soil is a measure of how well the soil supports plant growth.
what is loam? soil that is made up of about equal parts of clay, sand, and silt.
what is soil horizon? is a layer of soil that differs in color and texture from the layers above or below it.
what is topsoil? a crumbly dark brown soil this is a mixture of humus, clay, and other minerals.
what is subsoil? usually consists of clay and other particles washed down from the A horizon ,but little humus.
what is litter? when plants die, their remains fall to the ground and become part of the litter.
what are decomposers? are the organisms that break the remains of dead organisms into smaller pieces and digest them with chemicals.
what is sod? the thick mass of tough roots at the surface of the soil.
what is a natural resource? is anything in the environment that humans use.
what is a Dust Bowl? the erosion was most serious in the Southern Plains states.
what is soil conservation? is the management of soil to prevent its destruction.
what is contour plowing? farmers plow their fields along the curves.
what is conservation plowing? farmers disturb the soil and its plant cover as little as possible
what is crop rotation? a farmer plants different crops in a field each year.
