Biology 10 - Taxonomy and Classification

Why do we classify? avoid confusing common names, international communication, show relationship and order
Linnaeus assigned 2 word names to all organisms
What is binomial nomenclature? species are assigned a 2 part scientific name
Genus? a group of similar species
How are things classified? the more similar they are, the closer they are classified
How does binomial nomenclature name things? first word is the genus, second word is the species
8 Classification levels? Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
What is the goal of evolutionary classification? to group species into larger categories that reflect lines of evolutionary descent, rather than overall similarities and differences
What is a clade? a group of species that includes a single comon ancestor
What is a cladogram? a diagram showing how evolutionary lines branched off from common ancestors
What is derived character? a trait that arose in the most recent ancestor of a particular linege and was passed along to its descendants.
What are the 6 Kingdoms of life? Eubacteria, Archaebacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia
Is the genus or the species capitalized in binomial nomenclature? Genus!
If you have similar DNA it means...? you have common ancestry
During Linnaeus's time, people divided things in what 2 ways? plants and animals
What is phylogeny? the evolutionary history of lineages
Why do we classify living things in 3 domains? It used to be 2 but then scientists realized the were more differences than previously thought
Which Kingdom has cell walls that contain "chitin"? Fungi
