Life Over Time Study GUide

QuestionAnswer
Define Evolution and explain how it relates to genetic material. It is the process which species change over time. It is passed down.
Define natural selection. When members of a species that are better suited to their environment to survive and reproduce at a higher rate.
Describe the idea of overproduction. When and animal reproduces more than the environment can support.
Describe the idea of variation. Mutation in genetic material that causes a change in species.
What is an adaptation. Inherited trait that gives an organism an advantage.
How are variations and adaptations different. A variation is the slight change in genetic material that causes an adaptation.
Describe the idea of isolation. The inability to breed with mainland animals.
Why do classify organisms? Why or Why not? To keep track of 3 to 10 million living things, it keep everything organized.
What are the 8 levels of classification. Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
Which is the most specific level of classification, where the organisms are most specific. Species
Which level of classification is the most general and contains the most members. Domain
What are the 3 domains. Bacteria, Archea, Eukarya
How many kingdoms are there? What are they? 6, bacteria, archea, animalia, protista, fungi, plantae
Describe the characteristics of the kingdom plantae. -can't move -multicellular -eukaryotic -cell wall -photosynthesis -grow upwards, towards light
List examples of organisms from the kingdom animalia. bear, whale, human, insects, dogs
List examples of the 3 organisms of kingdom Fungi. Mushroom, molds, yeasts
What is unique about the kingdom archea survive in extreme temperature.
