Ecosystems Vocab

TermDefinition
Ecological Succession Gradual change from one community of organisms to another.
Primary Succession Ecological succession that begins in a place that does not have soil.
Pioneer Community The first community of organisms to move into a new environment.
Secondary Succession Succession that begins in a place that already has soil and was once the home of living organisms.
Climax Community When a community has reached the final stage of ecological succession.
Biomes Large geographic areas that have similar climates and ecosystems.
Tundra Cold, treeless region that receives little precipitation but is covered with ice most of the year. Sometimes called the cold desert.
Taiga A cold region of cone-bearing evergreen trees. This is the largest biome in the world.
Temperate Deciduous Forest A region that has 4 distinct seasons and trees that lose their leaves every autumn
Tropical Rain Forest Region with warm, stable temperatures and abundant rainfall.
Grassland Dry, temperate region dominated by grasses such as wheat, rye, oats, barley and corn.
Desert The driest biome on Earth, which receives less than 25 cm of rain each year and supports little plant life.
Plankton Algae, plants, and other tiny organisms.
Estuary Area where a river meets the ocean. It contains a mixture of freshwater and salt water.
Intertidal Zone The portion of the shoreline that is covered with water at high tide and exposed to the air during low tide.
