Biology Chapter 10

Section 3

QuestionAnswer
Interaction between what is important? genes with different genes and genes with the enviornment
What is an example of gene interaction? dominance
Why is one trait dominant over another? the dominant allele codes for a polypeptide that works while the recessive codes for a polypeptide that doesnt work
example of dominance B-black pigment for fur in mice while b= defective enzyme that does not make pigment
When is the mouse able to make black pigment only when just one allele B is present
What did Josef Kolreuter do? he crossed red and white flowers
What were the results of Josef Kolreuters cross? all flowers were pink
What did Josef Kolreuters results inforce? blending inheritance
What were the results of Josef Kolreuters? (fractions) 1/4 red, 1/2 pink, 1/4 white
What did his results show? red is not completely dominant to white
What is incomplete dominance? the active allele doesnt compensate totally for the inactive allele producing off spring that have a trait between the homozygous genotype traits in the heterozygous offspring
What is codominance? a condition where both allels of a trait are expressed
What are both of the alleles in codominance? they are both active
How are codominate allele written? using a capital letter and a supscript or superscript
Example of codominance HRHR= red hair HrHr=white hair HRHr=pinkish hair due to a 50/50 mix of red and white hair
What is polygenic inheritance? traits that are the result of more than one gene
Example of polygenic inheritance 3 pigments that produce pigments in eyes of fruit flies, each is produced by a different gene which produces varying amts of pigment in fruit flies eyes

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
