TermDefinition
Nucleus Control center of cell, Double membrane nuclear evelope.
Chromatin Inside the the nucleus, protein and Dna mix to form chromosomes (visible in cell divison)
Nucleolus Dark bodies inside the nucleus where ribosomes are synthesized.
Nuclear pores opening in evelope where MRNA passes for protein synthesis.
Cytoskeleton A network of long strands in cytosol, makes up framework for support and movement of organelles.
3 Strands of Cytokeleton MIcrotubles-movement, microfilaments, intermediary filaments.
ex. of cytoskeleton Mitosis, centrioles, flagella, muscle contraction.
lysomoes "death sacs" contain digestive enzymes, interralate with vacules, digest old cell parts, food digestion in protists, viruses of bacteria destroyers, recyled/ reused over and over.
endoplasmic reticulum Transport network of the cell, smooth ER has no ribosomes, moves back and forth inside the cytoplasm, part of endomembrane system.
Rough ER has ribosomes for protein synthesis of materials to be shipped out of cell.
Ribosomes Made of protein and RNA, protein synthesis,,
Free Ribosomes in the cytosol makes protein for use in the cell.
Bound ribosomes attacked to ER makes protein for export
Hooke Coined the term "cell" after viewing cork.
Leeuwenhoew Deveoled the first microscope and saw first microorganisms.
PLasma membrane Fluid mosaic model, bilayer of lipids, embedded with proteins, cholesterol, glycolipids (carbs), selectively permeable-ex. lab with dialysis bags, controls what goes in and out of the cell.
Chloroplast Found in plant cells, site of photosynthesis in plants, some bateria and some protists, Double membrane structure.
Grana Found int he chloroplast, site of light dependent reaction, looks like stack of coins.
Stroma Found in chloroplast, site of light independent reaction area surrounding thylasis
Mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell, Double membrane,
Cristae part of the mitochondria, infolded walls, stores ATP.
Matrix Part of the mitochondria, area surroounding cristae respiration occurs here.
organelles tiny organs
Golgi apparatus packages materials for cells
forming face part of the golgi apparatus, side where materials to be packaged enter.
Maturing face Part of the golgo apparatus, side where materials packaged are exported.
plant cell walls composed of Cellulose
fungi cell walls composed of chitin
baterial cell walls composed of peptidoglycan
cell walls found only in plants, fungi, and baterias. for support and protection, rigid.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
