Element A pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances.
Pure Substance Substance made of only one type of particle.
Molecule Two or more atoms combined in a fixed ratio.
Metals Shiny, good conductors of electricity and heat, malleable and ductile.
Nonmetal Dull, poor conductors of electricity and heat, brittle, unmalleable.
Metalloids semiconductors; properties of both metals and non-metals.
Compound Pure substance composed of two or more elements chemically combined, one particle of a compound is a molecule. Can be broken down into simpler compounds or elements through chemical change.
Subscripts Used to indicate the number of atoms in a molecule (or compound).
Sodium Poisonous, explosive, not naturally occurring, solid, soft metal.
Chlorine Poisonous, gas, purification, naturally occurring.
Mixture A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
Homogeneous Uniform dispersion Evenly mixed
Heterogeneous Non-uniform dispersion Non-evenly mixed
Solution A homogeneous mixture that appears to be a single substance. Particles are evenly distributed.
