SC7 Living Cells
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Active Transport | The transport of materials that requires energy. |
| ATP | Adenosine Triphosphate The form in which energy from respiration is stored in a cell. |
| Botanist | A plant scientist. |
| Cell Division | A process that forms new cells. Mitosis and meiosis are two forms of cell division. |
| Cell Respiration | A process of the cell in which energy is produced by the breakdown of sugar. |
| Cell Theory | The theory that all living things are made of cells, that cells are the basic units of life, and that cells come only from other living cells. |
| Cell Transportation | The process by which materials are moved in and out of the cell. |
| Chromosome | A long ribbon of genetic material inside the nucleus that directs cell activities. |
| Diffusion | A type of passive transport that occurs when things move from greater concentration to lesser concentration. |
| DNA | Deoxyribonucleic acid controls all cell functions and holds all the genetic information of an organism. |
| Double Helix | The arrangement of DNA that looks much like a long twisted ladder. |
| Electron Microscope | A microscope that uses a beam of electrons, rather than light and lenses, to “see” objects. |
| Eukaryote Cell | A cell that has the chromosomes contained within a nucleus. |
| Gene | The packets of genetic information (DNA) that make up the chromosomes. |
| Glucose | A simple sugar that produces energy as a product of cell respiration. |
| Meiosis | A type of cell division that produces daughter cells with only a half set of chromosomes. |
| Mitosis | A type of cell division that produces daughter cells with a full set of chromosomes. |
| Nucleotide Base | The special molecules that join to form the “rungs” of the DNA ladder. These bases are thymine, adenine, guanine, and cytosine. |
| Organelle | One of many cell structures that carries out a specific function within a cell. |
| Osmosis | A type of passive transport that involves the movement of water across a semipermeable membrane. |
| Passive Transport | Transportation of materials that requires no energy. |
| Prokaryote Cell | A cell that lacks a nucleus, causing the chromosomes to be distributed throughout the cell. |
| RNA | Ribonucleic acid, RNA works as a messenger to carry the directions from DNA in the nucleus out to the organelles in the cytoplasm. |
| Synthesis | The process in the cell that produces new molecules and compounds. |
| Zoologist | A scientist who studies the classification, structure, process, and behavior of animals. |
