| hydrocarbons | Energy-rich chemical compounds that contain carbon and hydrogen |
| reserves | Known deposits of fossil fuels that can be obtained using current technologies. |
| petroleum | Another name for oil, from the Latin words petra (rock) and oleum (oil) |
| refinery | A factory where crude oil is separated into fuels and other products by heating it. |
| petrochemicals | Compounds that are made from oil and are then used to make plastics, paints, medicines, and cosmetics |
| nonrenewable resources | Natural resources that are not replaced as they are used |
| compound | A combination of two or more elements ex:H2O is a compound that contains the elements hydrogen and oxygen |
