combustion The process of burning a fuel
fossil fuels An energy-rich substance (coal, oil, & natural gas) that formed from the remains of once-living organisms
hydrocarbons Energy-rich chemical compounds that contain carbon and hydrogen
reserves Known deposits of fossil fuels that can be obtained using current technologies.
petroleum Another name for oil, from the Latin words petra (rock) and oleum (oil)
refinery A factory where crude oil is separated into fuels and other products by heating it.
petrochemicals Compounds that are made from oil and are then used to make plastics, paints, medicines, and cosmetics
nonrenewable resources Natural resources that are not replaced as they are used
compound A combination of two or more elements ex:H2O is a compound that contains the elements hydrogen and oxygen
