Earth Layers

TermDefinition
Lithosphere The solid lower layer of the crust.
Asthenosphere The uppermost layer of the mantle.
Crust the outer layer of the earth.
Mantle the layer of hot, solid material between Earth's crust and core
Outer Core a layer of molten iron and nickel that surrounds the inner core of Earth
Inner Core a dense sphere of solid iron and nickel at the center of Earth
Convection Current The circular movement of substances due to changes in density.
Seismic Waves Waves produced by earthquakes that help us study the inner layers of Earth.
Continental Crust The thickest type of crust.
Oceanic Crust The thinnest type of crust
Crust Rock, Solid, 5-4,000 mi
Mantle Iron, Liquid, 2,867 mi
Outer Core Nickle, Liquid, 1,800-3,200 mi
