__Earthquakes

QuestionAnswer
What are earthquakes? A sudden and violent shaking of the ground from seismic waves, possibly causing destruction.
What are seismic waves? Seismic waves are waves of energy that travel through the core of the earth or other elastic bodies.
What are P Waves? P Waves are seismic waves that are the first waves registered on the seismograph.
What are L Waves? L Waves are seismic waves that are secondary, coming behind P Waves.
What are S Waves? S Waves are surface waves that are very destructive.
How do earthquakes happen? Earthquakes occur when two tectonic plates grind past each other.
What is the plate boundary called when two plates grind past each other? Transform boundaries
Where can earthquakes happen? Both near and below the Earth's surface.
What is a body wave? A wave traveling on the Earth's exterior.
Why does some seismic waves travel faster than others? Because of the material it travels through.
What is the only form of matter that S Waves travel through? Solids
What is the start of the earthquake called? The focus
What is the place called on the surface directly above the epicenter? The epicenter
What is a seismograph? An instrument that measures and records details of earthquakes, such as force and duration.
What is a seismologist? A seismologist is someone who studies earthquake and seismic patterns.
What is the Richter scale? A scale that measures the magnitude or the intensity of the quake.
What is the Mercalli scale? A scale that measures the damage of the earthquake.
