Give an example of a use for an enzyme outside of the body One from: Biological washing powder, sweetening food, lactose-free milk and testing for sugar
What enzyme is used to break down Sucrose? Sucrase
What are the products of this reaction? Glucose and Fructose
What enzymes are used in biological washing powder? Amylase, Lipase, Protease
What are the optimum conditions for biological washing powder? temperature between 30oC and 40oC and a pH 7
How are enzymes immobilised? Making them into alginate jelly beads, putting them on reagent sticks
What food process are jelly beads used in? Turning cows milk into lactose-free milk by putting lactase in the beads which breaks down the lactose into glucose and galactose which can be easily absorbed
What are reagent sticks used for? To test for sugar in urine to insure that a person has the right amount of insulin and whether they are diabetic
What do Amylase, Lipase and Protease break down? Carbohydrate, Fat and Protein respectively
Why are biological washing powders more economical than non-bio washing powders? Because they work best between 30 and 40 degrees so they use less energy than non-bio washing powder
Why don't enzymes work well in very acidic or very alkaline tap water? The extreme pH changes the enzymes' shape, they become denatured
Why are the enzymes Amylase, Protease and Lipase used in biological washing Powders? Because the soluble products of digestion are easily washed out of clothes
What colour does the Benedict's Reagent go if sugar is present? It goes from blue to Red.
