What does an enzyme do? An enzyme acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.
Name 3 examples of enzymes in biological washing powders? Amylases, Lipases and Proteases.
What is the name of the temperature in which enzymes work best at? The optimum temperature.
What conditions most efect the rate of reaction of enzymes? PH and temperature.
What does the substrate fit into? The active site.
What do lipases digest and remove? fat and fatty stains
What is the mechanism called where the enzyme is unique to fit the shape of the substrate? The lock and key mechanism.
What happens to the enymes when the temperature becomes too hot? They denature.
What are enzymes made of? Proteins.
What enzyme breaks down lactose? Lactase.
What enzyme is used to produce lactose free milk? Immobilised lactase enzyme.
What do diabetics use to measure their blood glucose concentration on a daily basis? Reagent strips.
What enzyme do clinistix contain? Glucose oxidase.
During a reaction, what part of the 'lock and key mecanism' splits to form products? The substrate.
What enzymes are on the reagent strips that measure blood glucose concentration? Immobilised enzymes.
