| Term | Definition |

| Intrusive Rocks | rocks that harden beneath the Earth's surface |
| Extrusive Rocks | rocks forming from lava that has erupted on the Earth's surface |
| Erosion | process causing the carrying away of rock fragments by running water, wind, and/or ice |
| Depostion | settling of sediment in a new location as a result of wind and water |
| Compaction | pressing sediment together over a period of time |
| Cementation | the process which causes loose sediment and dissolved minerals to become glued together |
| Clastic | form when rock fragments are squeezed together |
| Organic | remains of plants and animals are deposited in thick layers |
| Chemical | minerals are dissolved in solution and crystallize |
| Foliated | rocks that have grains arranged in parallel layers |
| Non-foliated | mineral grains in rocks are arranged randomly |
| Igneous Rocks | produced under conditions involving intense heat, as rocks of volcanic origin or rocks crystallized from molten magma. |
| Sedimentary Rocks | produced when small, solid pieces of material become tightly packed together |
| Metamorphic Rocks | produced when heat and pressure within the Earth change any rock to a new form |
