Lecture 9

Lecture 9: Muscles

QuestionAnswer
Epimysium outermost layer of muscle composed of dense irregular connective tissue
Perimysium layer of fibrous connective tissue that wraps the muscle fascicle
Muscle Fascicle groups of muscle fibers contained within the perimysium
Endomysium layer of areolar connective tissue that surround an individual muscle fiber
Myosatellite Cells capillaries that bring nutrients to the fiber and muscle stem cells
Sarcolemma cell membrane of the muscle
Sarcoplasm cytoplasm of muscle
Glycosomes vesicles containing glycogen
Myoglobin similar in function to hemoglobin
Sarcomere functional unit of the muscle; smallest contractile unit of the muscle
Myofilaments thick filaments of myosin and thing filaments of actin
A-Band darkest band where actin and myosin overlap; equal to the length of the myosin filament
H-Band lighter than A-band; middle part of myosin that doesn't overlap with actin
I-Band lightest band; part of actin which doesn't overlap with myoisin
Z-Line structural protein which anchors actin
M-Line holds myosins in register
Thing Filaments composed of F-actin and 300-400 G-actins )globular proteins)
Nebulin protein which maintains the position of G-actin
Tropomyoisin double stranded protein that covers the active site of each G-actin
Active Site site where actin binds to myosin
Troponin formed by 3 globular subunits, T, I, and C
Tail attached to the M line
Head composed of two globular subunits; site of contact between the thin and thick filaments
ATPase enzyme that catalyzes the decomposition of ATP to ADP
Hinge connects tail to head
Titin elastic filament associated with the thick filament, helps the muscle spring back after contraction
Sarcoplasmic Reticulum equivalent of smooth endoplasmic reticulum in other cells;
Terminal Cisternae expansion of SR in proximity of the I and A band junctions
Calsequestrin protein that reversibly binds to CA within the terminal cisternae
Transverse Tubules tubes contiguous with the sarcolemma and invaginate within the sarcoplasm
Triad formed by a pair of terminal cisternae and a t-tubule
Neuromuscular Junction synapses between a somatic motor neuron and a skeletal muscle cell
motor end plate region of the sarcolemma at the NMJ
Alpha motor neuron cell body located in the ventral horn of the gray matter of the spinal cord
End Plate Potentials EPSP depolarization of the motor end plate
Excitation-Contraction coupling sequence of events by which transmission of an action potential leads to sliding of myofilaments

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
