CLASSIFYING MATTER

SCIENCE

TermDefinition
Atom The smallest part of an element.
chemical change a change that produces new substances with new properties.
Chemical Property indicates how a substance reacts with other substances.
Chemical Reaction One step in a series of steps that takes place in a chemical change.
Compound a substance that forms when two or more different kinds of atoms combine.
Electron A particle in an atom that has a NEGATIVE charge.
Element It is made up of only one Kind on Atom.
Mixture 2 or more substances mixed together but can be separated out because their atoms are not combined.
Molecule When two or more atoms that are alike or different COMBINE, they form this:
Neutron The particle of an atom that has NO CHARGE.
Nucleus The CENTER of an atom where protons and neutrons are located.
Periodic Table a chart that classifies elements by their properties.
Physical Change a change in one or more physical properties: melting ice.
Physical Property a trait that can be observed or measured without changing the substance into something else.
Proton Particle in an atom that has a POSITIVE Charge.
Solution a mixture in which a substance breaks up into its most basic particles which are too small to be seen and SPREAD EVENLY.
