Animal Behaviors and Symbiotic Relationships

Symbiosis a close relationship between two organisms
Commensalism one organism benefits, the other is unaffected
Parasitism one organism benefits, the other is harmed
Mutualism both organisms benefit
Cooperation When two or more organisms work together to reach a goal
Predation (Predator/Prey) One animal stalks and eats another animal
Competition Interaction between organisms where the fitness of one is lowered by the presence of the other
Territorial Imperative Defending an area from other members of the same species
Social Hierarchy Dominance One member of species controls others
Niche Role played by an organism in the natural world; a job
Migration Movement to a new location
Hibernation Long period of sleep(inactivity) whereby the heart rate and temperature drops
territory An area that an animal defends from other members of the same species
Courtship Allows male and female members of a species to recognize each other
social behavior Interactions among organisms of the same species
society a group of animals of the same species living and working together in an organized way
cyclic behavior Innate behaviors that occur in a repeating pattern
circadian rhythm Behavior based on a 24-hour cycle
nocturnal active at night
diurnal active during the day
pheromones A chemical produced by one animal to influence the behavior of another animal
aggression Forceful act used to dominate or control another animal
